What to Wear to a Wedding in a Church

Shoulders and hem first, then the reception. A wrap is not optional in many sanctuaries. The card still names the code.

What to Wear to a Wedding in a Church — still life for this Occasions guide on Nonchallant

Shoulders, knees, stone

A strapless or spaghetti-strap dress can still be the reception garment if you cover it for vows. A wrap that matches, a cropped jacket, a shawl that is not a beach towel. Hem at the knee when you sit — pews punish a mini. Stone floors are cold and loud; leather with a quiet sole, a block heel, not a metal tip that announces every aisle step.

The card is still in charge

A church does not downgrade black tie to jeans. If the invite says cocktail, wear cocktail with a wrap. If it says black-tie optional, wear that, then add coverage for the ceremony. Do not use ‘it is a church’ as a reason to underdress a formal wedding, or as a reason to wear a ballgown to a 2pm modest service that printed garden.

Hats, phones, and the aisle

Hats off if they block the row behind, unless the tradition wears them. Phones away. A bag that sits at your feet, not a tote in the pew. You will stand, sit, kneel in some rooms — test the dress for all three before you leave the hotel.

Questions, answered

Can I wear a strapless dress if I bring a wrap?
Yes in most US churches if the wrap stays on for the ceremony. Some cathedrals will still side-eye a lot of skin. When unsure, sleeves.
Are open-toe shoes okay?
A finished sandal at an evening church wedding, sometimes. Closed leather is the safer sanctuary default.
What if I am not religious?
You are still in their building. Cover what they cover. You do not have to kneel; you do have to dress like a guest.
