The ground is the dress code
Tasting rooms sit on gravel, decomposed granite, or wet grass between rows. A 90mm stiletto punches through. A brand-new white leather sneaker records every pour and every dust cloud. A broken-in leather sneaker, a loafer, or a block heel under 50mm with a rubber or combination sole will do three hours of walking and a cellar stair.
If the invitation says “garden formal,” it is still dirt. Read heel type before you pack the slingback.
Wine is a stain, not a vibe
Red wine on ivory silk is a souvenir you did not want. Navy, stone, olive, oxblood, and mid denim hide a splash long enough to rinse. White jeans are a bet. A dark midi in wool crepe or cotton is the seated tasting uniform. Linen wrinkles; that is allowed outdoors and looks like a costume in a white-tablecloth dining room attached to the estate.
Pockets. A tasting is a glass plus a phone plus a spit cup. A clutch that needs a table is a problem on a barrel.

- Navy / stone / olive / dark denim — not ivory, not white suede

Sun, scent, and the indoor pour
Hats with a brim you can take off indoors. Sunscreen that does not transfer onto a pale linen you should not have worn. Skip heavy scent — you are here to smell wine, and so is the person on your left.
If the day includes a seated lunch, the same outfit should look finished when you sit, the way a first date does when the coat comes off. If the only good garment is a floral maxi that needs a field to make sense, you will spend lunch apologizing with a napkin.

- Are jeans acceptable at a tasting room?
- Dark or mid, clean, unripped, with a proper shoe — yes at most estate rooms. Skip them if the booking is a chef’s table with a stated dress code.
- Can I wear wedges?
- A stacked wedge with a real sole can do grass. A cork fashion wedge on wet gravel is a snapped ankle waiting for a photo.
- What bag works?
- A slim zip crossbody or a leather belt bag worn in front. Straw and canvas soak a splash and then smell like a bar rag.
