Stone floors, a coat you will surrender, velvet if you mean it. Summer cloth in January looks like you packed from a different invite.

Floors are stone and they are cold
Churches, hotels, and barns in January have floors that pull heat out of a thin sole. Wear leather with some structure, a block heel, or a dress boot that is actually a dress boot — not a chunky snow boot under a gown unless the couple asked for a barn and a blizzard. Opaque tights in a matching tone. Bare legs in a stone chapel is a statement the photographs will not thank you for.

Coat check is part of the outfit
You will hand the coat to a stranger and then stand in a vestibule. The indoor outfit has to be complete without the coat. A wrap or a stole you keep is useful in a pew. A puffer that only looks finished zipped to the chin is not a wedding coat.
Velvet works in winter because it takes light without looking like a curtain — a $120–$280 velvet blazer or a midi, not a crushed costume from a party store.
Barns, hotels, and churches are different winters
A heated hotel ballroom can take a gown and a pump. An unheated barn wants boots, wool, and a wrap you do not check. A stone church wants covered shoulders for the ceremony even if the reception is a hotel — bring the wrap, use it, drop it later.

- Is velvet too much for cocktail?
- A velvet midi or jacket is winter cocktail. A full velvet ballgown is black tie. Match the card, not the fabric’s ego.
- Can I wear black?
- Yes in winter, in a cocktail or evening fabric. Texture it — velvet, crepe, a jewel earring — so it does not read as a funeral.
- What about outdoor photos in the snow?
- Keep the coat on until they ask. Waterproof the sole. Do not ruin a silk hem on a plow pile for one shot.
