What to Wear to a School Open House
You are a parent in a hallway, not a candidate for the board. Comfortable, clean, one notch above the playground.

Parents, not a PTA costume
Open house is fluorescent hallways and a name tag. Look like a functioning adult: clean, covered, no slogan that a ten-year-old will read aloud. A navy sweater over an oxford, dark trousers, a midi that allows stairs. Logo gym shorts and a stained hoodie photograph as you did not plan to come.
- Chinos, dark jeans, or trousers with a real waist — you may sit in a small chair
- Collared shirt, knit, or a simple dress, $40–$140
- Closed shoes you can stand in a gym in
- Skip: cocktail, full suit (usually), political slogans, clubwear
Admissions tour is a different night
If you are touring a private school you have not been admitted to, bump up: blazer, leather shoe, quieter jewelry. You are being glanced at. That is closer to interview clothes than to curriculum night at the public elementary.
Coats, bags, and the parking-lot weather
A coat that fits over a chair back. A bag that is not a giant tote of sports equipment unless you came from practice. Phones away in the classroom. You are in someone else’s workplace.

- Dark, unripped jeans at most public-school open houses. Wear chinos or trousers for a private-school admissions evening.
- Should I match the other parents?
- Glance at the parking lot. If it is puffer-and-athleisure, do not arrive in a tuxedo. If it is blazers, add one.
- What if I am also a teacher at the school?
- Wear what you would teach in, not party clothes. Students still go here tomorrow.
