The seat is the garment constraint
You will sit in 18–20 inches of width for two hours. Thick peacoats stay in laps and then on the floor. Wear a layer you can fold. Avoid wide hats, crinolines, and a bag on your lap that becomes a wall. Quiet soles on stairs in the dark.
- Matte wool, crepe, merino — no rustling taffeta or plastic rain shells in the auditorium
- A coat that checks or folds; not a technical parka with six pockets of keys
- Phone dark, watch face dim, no light-up sneakers
- Bag that fits under the seat, $0 novelty clutches that need a hand
Play, musical, opera, ballet
A straight play on a Tuesday: dark jeans can pass with a jacket in some houses and still look careless in others. A musical on Saturday night: a dress or a suit looks like you meant to be there. Opera and ballet: lean toward the dark suit or a midi in crepe. Opening nights and galas may print black tie; believe them.
Intervals, rain, and the street after
London and New York want a coat that handles rain and a shoe that handles a wet pavement. You will stand in a bar queue at the interval — a glass in one hand, a program in the other. Pockets. If you wore a gown to a gala performance, arrange the check in advance.

- Can I wear sneakers to Broadway?
- Clean leather sneakers sometimes pass and still look like you came from the airport. A loafer or oxford is the adult default.
- Is a tuxedo ever required?
- Almost never for a regular performance. Opening-night galas and some opera boxes print it. Otherwise a dark suit is the ceiling.
- What about a hat?
- Off in the auditorium. You are sitting in front of someone. A winter beanie comes off with the coat.
