What to wear
What to Wear When Meeting the Parents
Lunch is lighter than dinner. A holiday house is more casual than a restaurant they chose. Do not match your partner. Bring a coat you can hang and a gift that is not a project.

Lunch, dinner, and the holiday house are three outfits
Ask your partner what the parents actually wear, not what they wish they wore. A Saturday lunch at their kitchen table is chinos or dark jeans without rips, a collared shirt or a fine knit, loafers or clean leather sneakers. A dinner they booked at a restaurant with a tablecloth adds a navy blazer and a leather shoe. You are aiming at “took this seriously,” not at interview armor.
A holiday house weekend is the most casual and the easiest to get wrong. Pack indoor-clean socks or slippers if it is a no-shoes house, a sweater, and one slightly smarter shirt for the meal out. Athleisure as the only look reads as you thought this was a gym. A full suit at a lake house reads as you thought this was a closing.
| Setting | The outfit | Shoes | The miss |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saturday lunch, their kitchen | Chinos or dark jeans, collared shirt or knit | Loafers, clean leather sneakers | A suit, gym shorts, a stained hoodie |
| Dinner at a restaurant they chose | The lunch kit plus a navy blazer | Leather oxford or loafer | Open athletic shoes, a cocktail dress from a wedding |
| Holiday / weekend at their house | Jeans without holes, sweater, one smarter shirt | Take-off-at-the-door shoes, decent socks | Matching couple pajamas as a bit |
| Place of worship with them | Covered shoulders, darker cloth, ask your partner | Closed shoes | The Saturday-lunch T-shirt |
Tattoos: cover if you want, not because you must
If your partner has already told you the household will spend the meal staring, a long sleeve is cheap peace. A merino crew or an oxford shirt covers a forearm; you are not erasing yourself, you are postponing a conversation you do not owe a first lunch. If the parents have tattoos, or your partner does, wearing a short sleeve is not a test you are failing.
Facial piercings and very fresh work are the sharper case — a new tattoo under a healing film will attract questions you may not want between courses. Jewelry stays in the first-date range: one chain, small earrings, a watch. You can wear the rest of your stack on the way home.
Do not show up as a matching set
Couples who dress identically look like they planned a photoshoot. If your partner is in a navy suit, you are in chinos and a shirt, or a dress and a cardigan — not a second navy suit. If they are in jeans, do not one-up them into cocktail. You are meeting their family, not walking into their wedding as a coordinated party.
Ask what they are wearing, then offset by one step of formality in either direction, not five. The goal is two adults who got dressed, not a brand campaign. Avoid his-and-hers merch, couple T-shirts, and anything with the relationship’s inside joke on it.
The coat, the gift, and the two minutes on the porch
A coat you can hang on a crowded peg without knocking everyone else’s down: wool or a simple parka, not a technical mountain shell covered in clips, not a floor-length costume. Take it off when you come in. Shoes: be ready to remove them. Wear socks you would show a stranger.
Bring a gift that does not create work. Wine in the $20–$35 range if they drink, flowers already in a jar of water, or a food thing they mentioned. Do not bring a project (a bag of uncut vegetables, a dessert that needs their oven for an hour, a scented candle the size of a brick). Hold the gift in your hands so you are not hugging someone with a bottle under your arm. Two minutes on the porch to check your teeth and take the sunglasses off is the entire grooming plan.
Questions, answered
- Is a suit too much for meeting the parents?
- At their house at lunch, yes. At a jacket-required restaurant or a holiday service, a navy blazer or a dark suit is correct. Ask your partner what the father or mother will wear and match that band, not a magazine version of “meeting the parents.”
- Should I cover my tattoos?
- Cover them if your partner has flagged that the household will make the meal about the ink. Otherwise a sleeve is optional. You can always roll a cuff later. You cannot un-say a first impression fight.
- What gift is safe?
- A $20–$35 bottle they can serve or ignore, or flowers in water. Ask about allergies and whether they drink. Do not bring a scented object for a house you have never entered, and do not bring nothing if they are feeding you.
